Graphene Patents

Graphene Patents soar to records.

A surge in research into the novel material graphene reveals an intensifying global contest to lead a potential industrial revolution.

China leads the field as the country with the most patents.

The South Korean electronics giant Samsung stands out as the company with most to its name.

According to new figures from rfcexpress, there were  12,878 graphene patents and patent applications across the world by the end 2012 - a remarkably high number for a material only recognized for less than a decade.

Further analysis reveals that the largest filers are universities and government laboratories in the U.S., China, Japan and Korea. U.S. universities have accrued more than 1,000 global graphene patent and patent applications. The leading schools are Rice (195), the University of California system (119) and MIT (97). Chinese universities also have more than 1,000 global patent applications and grants including Zhejiang University with 91 and Nanjing University with 74. In Korea, Sungkyunkwan University has 102 graphene patents.

Of that total, Chinese institutions and corporations have the most - the largest number of any country and clear evidence of Chinese determination to capitalise on graphene's future value.

At the closing of 2012, among large corporations, Samsung leads with 413 graphene patents, IBM with 221, Cannon with 122, BASF with 112 and General Electric with 87. Other unexpected leaders are flash-memory maker Sandisk with 235, and graphite maker Graftech with 232 graphene patents.
